COMMISSIONING AN OA ART INSTALLATION at 2025 UN Ocean Conference:

confronting the unseen impacts of carbon in our ocean: A call to action

The International  Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification (OA Alliance) and Affiliate member PangeaSeed are proposing an art project for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference that will support the overarching theme of “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”, by leveraging the transformative power of art as a tool to communicate science and target human emotions to instigate change.

the science

We want to convey the scale and impact of climate-ocean changes through the human senses, where the audience will be immersed in a digital art piece that will enable them to see, listen and feel what changes in ocean acidification means. Drawing upon the  OA stripes project which provides a visual representation of the rate of change in ocean acidification from global and regional observations over the past 40 years, we can further engage the visitor by bringing the OA stripes to dynamic life with color and images, helping the audience feel their significance.

why art

We believe that art has the power to promote scientific literacy by translating complex concepts into digestible visualizations or experiences that are accessible to broad audiences. Art makes science relatable, memorable, and motivational by engaging viewers and eliciting emotions through storytelling. Art provides a personal and human perspective of issues impacting the ocean and communities that builds connection, trust, and empathy with viewers.
