OA Alliance Endorses Ocean for Climate Declaration

The OA Alliance is a proud endorser of the Ocean for Climate Declaration.

The ocean has greatly slowed the rate of climate change. But at a cost: the ocean has continued to warm, become more acidified and oxygen depleted. The most recent IPCC AR6 report tells us that these impacts will increase in the 21st century at rates dependent on future emissions, threatening not only marine species and ecosystems but also the future ability of the ocean to indirectly support all life on Earth.

In this context, it is critical that COP26 increase global ambition to drastically and urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We know a healthy and productive ocean is a vital asset to achieve the resilient, nature-positive and net-zero future we want for our planet and the people in it.

This is the stance taken by the UNFCCC High-Level Climate Champions and the ocean community in signing the Ocean for Climate Declaration: a call to governments and non-state actors to scale up ocean-based climate solutions and action.
