Implementing SDG 14 and Joining the community of OA Action
On May 30-31, the OA Alliance, alongside partners Ocean Foundation and Gullah/Geechee Nation, participated in a meeting convened by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) aimed at supporting the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
The OA Alliance registered Voluntary Commitment (Ocean Action #15195) at the first UN SDG 14 Oceans Conference in June 2017 and committed to supporting the development of 20 OA Action Plans in 2019.
The meeting “From Commitments to Action: Implementing SDG14” convened leading governments and initiatives to share best practices and experiences across the different Communities of Ocean Action that collectively help to further all of the targets and indicators that comprise SDG 14.
Ocean acidification is captured in target 14.3 and calls on governments and civil society to minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels. It also establishes a shared indicator that average marine acidity (pH) be measured at an agreed suite of representative sampling stations.
The leadership and efforts of OA Alliance members are critical to helping meet the goals and targets set forth in UN SDG 14. We are proud of our membership for creating OA Action Plans which describe real, tangible actions that governments and affiliate members will take to respond to the threat of ocean acidification.
