OA Alliance at UN Ocean Conference 2022

We had a great start to the UN Ocean Conference kicking off June 27-July1 in Lisbon, Portugal, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal.

The OA Alliance began the conference by co-hosting a breakfast meeting, "Climate financing for ocean adaptation," which brought together OA science and policy coordinating bodies, national governments, and international climate finance regimes with charges to support countries in implementing climate adaptation and resilience strategies that advance goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.

The discussion provided a better understanding of eligibility requirements of climate financing for ocean acidification adaptation and community resiliency strategies.

In her opening remarks, Director of the OA Alliance, Jessie Turner stated:

"If you take away one message from today…we want it to be that OA Action is not just about enhancing ocean observation…but rather, OA Action is a necessary part of adequate and equitable climate preparedness and adaptation."

This week, we are doing our part to increase ambition for climate action and further implementation of UN SDG 14.3, "to minimize and address OA.”

OA Alliance will be demonstrating government and civil society commitment to OA action taking across a number of events and through the release of Voluntary Commitments made by membership!
